COOP IT UP

Ok, guys. I'm getting another crazy idea. I feel like I get some randomly good/crazy/enthusiastic ideas that seem really good at the time, but in reality, they are kinda out there. Ready for this one? Chicken coop!

What if... we built a chicken coop in our backyard? got some chickens? collected our own eggs? Part of me thinks that this is very unrealistic. Another part of me thinks, why the heck not!  I'm just want to be more self-sufficient and earth-friendly. You know what I mean?

There are a few problems. Maybe just one big problem. I don't like birds. I'm actually kinda terrified of them, but I do love eggs. Do you think that there are any classes that I could take to learn more about how to raise chickens for their eggs? You know, like what do they need? How do you even collect eggs? Do they ever get angry and freak out and peck at you for taking the eggs?

My first, and really only, source of information is (drum roll) reddit. They have a subreddit about backyard chickens. I'm going to fish around and see what else I can learn. Any suggestions and info would be appreciated!

  1. My brother has a couple chickens and they produce the most amazing eggs. Seriously, taste way better than the store! I think you could get over your fear of birds. Maybe only get 2 or 3 :)

  2. The way I usually go about collecting eggs is by driving to the store and purchasing them. They cost about a dollar. You could probably find some at your local grocer. I don't think you would need to take a class on how to do it either so that would save some time. Usually if you just ask an employee at the store they can tell you where the eggs are located. Typically there aren't any scary birds involved either so that's a plus. You wouldn't even need to build anything in your backyard, you could just keep your eggs in the fridge. I've heard that most people prefer coop-less backyards these days anyway as it gives you much more space and much less chickens.

Emily and I are thinking about going green as well by getting some cows and building a slaughterhouse in our backyard, but I haven't been able to convince our landlord to sign off on it yet.
